One person found this helpful. I enjoyed it, learned something about the ballet world. Worth watching for me. Fascinating and poignant first-hand look inside the Bolshoi Ballet.
Is it just me, or is it a really bad quality product? There are a couple of flaws, though, that prevent Bolshoi Babylon from being an outstanding work.
First, the filmmakers perpetuate the Ballet-Equals-Swan-Lake trope that seems to show up in every ballet movie meant to appeal to general audiences.
Second, very little screen time is devoted to talking to as opposed to looking at dancers. Filin is presented as a very divisive influence on the entire Bolshoi Ballet, so it would have been interesting to hear more of what people at all levels of the performance hierarchy thought and felt about him.
There are some interesting interviews with dancers and if you like ballet, the rehearsals and behind the scenes footage is fascinating.
But there's not much to the plot and very little information about the attack is explained, the motive is more or less hand-waved away.
The victim of the attack, in fact, ends up looking a bit like the bad guy in some respects. I'm not saying that's not justified, but given the arc of the documentary, it's rather disjointed.
It would have been better if the filmmakers offered up a consistent narrative instead of just a hodge podge of interviews and backstage access.

Inquisitive rather than intrusive and asking more question than it answers. However, it's refreshing that Read and Franchetti's work is not simply an ode to the ballet in all its splendour.
