When he tells the kids that he will be teaching them ballroom dancing they laugh at him and walk off. The next time he plays George Gershwin songs until they get so fed up they agree to line up.

He tries to break them up into couples for dancing but that again leads to trouble. He begins to teach them all the traditional dances like the Fox Trot and the Waltz and even gets them into a competition.

There are larger issues going on as well. The theme is that dance allows them both a way to express themselves as well as an escape from their problems.

The film is really great overall. The dancing is exciting and engaging. I liked it. It inspired me. I used to teach math and was a guidance counselor before retiring.

I'd love to see these kinds of programs in schools. Maybe I side with the math teacher in the movie a little because I also taught math. I lean toward programs with academics for after school activities to improve math but I also love dance, so keep in mind that I give this review with a bit of my own admitted math teacher bias.

The dancing in the movie was excellent. Most costumes were modest and all were stunning. I normally enjoy these kinds of movies but feel this one didn't hit the mark it was aiming for.

The writing took a shot at some serious social issues that just didn't work with the comedy. The writers crammed every cliche they could find into the characterization and plot.

I feel the movie tried to be too many things, tried to solve too many issues. They didn't take the time to really flesh out the dance instruction--no sense of how much time passed to indicate how the kids could have learned to dance like they did in the competition.
