American Sniper has a perspective that's recognizable from the classic Westerns Eastwood has long been associated with, both as an actor and a director.
It's an existential critique of violent machismo that doubles as a celebration of violence. Dana Stevens.
Eastwood makes the moral stakes almost nonexistent. David Edelstein. Clint Eastwood's American Sniper is an often lazy and somewhat hazy propaganda film about American heroism and hell in the Iraq War.
Bruce Kirkland. Although Cooper succeeds in resembling and sounding like the real Kyle, this isn't some cheap impersonation trick. Cooper gives maybe the best performance of his career.
Richard Roeper. Cooper looks the part, having bulked up for it, but he can't do anything with the blandness of the character the script has given him.
Sandra Hall. We've seen it before, but Eastwood is good at making it seem raw and personal, largely by the care he takes in building a character, and the situations that will test them.
Paul Byrnes. Richard Propes. The greatest victims of any war are children and the director captures it with one of the most brutal sequences ever seen on a screen, in which a drill leaves an indelible memory.
There's nothing the least bit expressive or off-putting in Eastwood's lighting or framing. He understands classical film grammar and knows how to deploy it to maximum emotional effect.

Military History. The kills credited to Kyle are more than for any sniper in American history, but the Navy SEAL told D Magazine that he wished instead that he could have calculated the number of people he saved.
Insurgents who once carried guns now toted rocket-propelled grenades. Kyle still proved a skilled marksman even killing an enemy fighter 1.
He drank heavily, suffered bouts of depression and stopped working out. Kyle felt anchorless without a mission and the camaraderie of his fellow SEALs.
But he discovered a new call to duty by helping ailing veterans suffering from the physical and psychological scars of war.
After seeing the therapeutic benefits of exercise in his own life, he helped to create the FITCO Cares Foundation in to provide exercise equipment and counseling to veterans.
Kyle donated his share of the book profits to families of colleagues who had died in battle and to a charity to help wounded veterans. The former Navy SEAL often brought troubled veterans along with him to shoot at targets as a way for them to better connect.
