But they cut the needed story and exposition in favor of an extra 10 minutes of idiotic dwarves in barrels like some amusement park ride.
Someone really needs to explain to Peter Jackson the difference between using a feather and using the whole damn chicken. For Tolkien and LotR fans it is pretty much a must see in order to get to the end of it all.
And the extended edition is the better cut. But if you haven't seen The Unexpected Journey this will make no sense to you.
If you saw the prior movie but also read the book, this will make even less sense to you. Your soul will die a little less that way.
