These kids are hilarious. The nitpicks are few. Is it a nitpick when I say that the movie gets so intense that it's exhausting? And emotionally draining?
I was wrung out by the end. I guess there's Bill's hypocrisy, when, as the Losers Club was about to brave the big bad's lair, he espouses the merit of staying together, and yet the moment he sees Georgie he takes off on his own.
Maybe my biggest gripe is that Beverly is kidnapped by Pennywise to serve as bait for the Losers Club. This didn't happen in the book.
It deprives Beverly her agency. It's frustrating because, in a previous scene, she'd just held her own against her monstrous dad.
Speaking of stuff that's been changed from book to movie: - Movie Georgie's body isn't found; in the book it was - Movie Ben is the library researcher, and not Mike - In the movie, there's no talking to the Turtle - there are turtle sightings sprinkled throughout the movie - In the movie, no sewer orgy this is a good thing But, overall, from book to movie, it's not such a radical departure.
If you haven't heard yet, this is only chapter one, and it focuses on the Losers Club when they were kids. No doubt, the sequel will dive into the other bits of the book which are the chapters of the Losers Club as adults.
Thing is, for me, the adult versions of the Losers Club made up the more boring bits of the book. We'll see if the screenplay spices it up.
We'll see if we get the sweeping Lovecraftian element so absent in this first chapter. We are used to scary stuff these days and its kind of hard to make movies that scare people.
What this movie had over the old one was a really good story told. The old one had a unique clown actor that played more of a comedy role than this one.
He made more comments on the kids fears more than this one. All and all i was keen to like this one for its story.
CGI really is what the old one really needed to make the vision of how horrifying the clown can be. I'm looking forward to the next movie and see where it takes us.
Side note Although I was originally disappointed that they didn't really follow the outline of the book, I decided to just set that aside, and look at the film as a stand-alone story.
That worked, because it scared the living daylights out of me. I judge how frightening a movie is, by my sleep success the night after I watch it.
If I have nightmares or I am too scared to come out from under the covers for a bit, I know it was a great thrill. The kids are all fantastic actors, and I am sure they will all go on to create great cinema.
Pennywise took my fear of clowns to a whole new level. I don't know if I will ever be able to eat at McDonald's again, for fear that the statue of Ronald McDonald will somehow morph into Pennywise.
This is in no way a comparison to the first It movie. Sorry but the intent is to be honest. I have read the Stephen King novel twice, which is long but well worth the read if you haven't already.
Having to wait until to see the rest is going to be painful but I am sure it will be well worth the wait. I have always and will always adore Tim Curry.
Nothing can ever tarnish that. That's why I was skeptical that I would like the new IT movie. I was blown away. He really captured the character in a brand new and terrifying way.
Absolutely stunning performance by the entire cast. I wasn't a huge fan of the original miniseries because I didn't think it was scary enough.

And It has -- children are disappearing or being horribly mutilated. Flashbacks show the difficult childhoods of the group, which includes successful architect Ben John Ritter , and prominent fashion designer Beverly Annette O'Toole.
Once known as "The Losers," they were constantly tormented by town bully Henry Michael Cole and his creepy gang.
But a worse threat soon materializes, a demonic clown called Pennywise Tim Curry , who first kills the little brother of future successful novelist-scriptwriter George Richard Thomas.
Both in and in the present, Pennywise taunts the various Losers and assumes the shapes of their worst fears. Director Tommy Lee Wallace makes some of the shocks work, and it's interesting seeing young actors like Seth Green matched against the adult ones like Harry Anderson playing the same part.
But the ponderous nature of the twin-timelined material makes this a long trip originally a TV miniseries, it's over three hours long.
And, besides being a metaphor for the adversities of youth, what exactly is Pennywise, anyway? Once must read the 1, page Stephen King book to find out.
The flashbacks are often repetitious, to keep the TV viewer up on the story over successive nights and commercial breaks of the miniseries.
And too bad It was made before computer graphics came into wide use. Instead, stiff puppetry and stop-motion depict such hallucinatory horrors as Pennywise squeezing out of tiny drains and turning into monsters.
Families can talk about the theme of friendship among the outcast kids in the movie and how it creates a secret world for them, one which unlike the town's mainstream society of adults allows them to perceive more clearly the menace of Pennywise and devise a plan to fight him.
The plot continually hops across a year timespan, seeing these characters both as grown ups and children.
Parents can talk about reunions with their own old friends and the importance of staying in touch whether to defend against evil demons or for slightly more sentimental reasons.
