SFF 18, Nr. Eigentlich müsste das Regie-Debüt von Robert D. Denn mal abgesehen von ein paar wirklich schönen Bildern, dem schönen Score und all dem, was der eigentliche Titel schon vorwegnimmt, passiert nahezu nichts.
Sam Elliot redet mit Leuten. Sam Elliot schweigt mit Leuten. Er starrt auf einen Drink, beschäftigt sich mit seinen Pillen und pennt auch noch bei einem Buch ein.
Das spielt er schon echt gut und souverän, aber ob der von Rückblicken geprägten Struktur des Films wollte er mir nie so ganz ans Herz gehen.
Oder die Grundlage…. I love the straightforward title of this movie. That is where my love ends for anything about it. To me, the title is reminiscent of other no-nonsense titles like "Snakes on a Plane" or "Hobo With a Shotgun.
This one was saturated with nonsense. A good chunk of the film was filled with flashbacks that felt anything but seamless, and frankly would have been better without.
Something about the dialogue felt forced and disjointed. I believe that fault lies partly with the director and partly with the editing.
I've seen a lot of negativity surrounding this one, which I think is understandable all things considered. The title alone suggests something a lot campier, more action packed.
Instead the film we got was very somber and serious, with both titular conflicts being handled more in passing, as set pieces to the more personal story of lost love and regret.
It's a good looking picture, shot in some gorgeous landscapes, with particularly great use of lighting. Elliott is wonderful, really bringing the emotion to the forefront.
I appreciate these elements, but it doesn't mean the film doesn't have issues. The supporting cast is largely just okay, with no one else really making a strong impression.

The story was paced wrong and the story had flaws. I give it credit though because it didn't look horrible and was well shot.
They may have actually spent money! There are like at least 3 movies in here and most of them are probably pretty good but in this form As it is a shockingly serious movie with no self awareness at all, which caught me off guard.
They could've literally taken both of those things out and had the same movie. Especially the Bigfoot stuff which is the most bizarre part of the movie.
So bizarre that it's hard to take it seriously at all. This type of concept works for satire or comedies that knows exactly what it is.
Kind of like what Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter was.

There are some things that work in this film such as Sam Elliott's performance and the flashback sequences, but everything else is just too odd without featuring some sort a satirical side.
I watched this movie purely based off the title and it was a much deeper character study than I expected. Sam Elliot is playing pretty much himself and has the same vibe as his cowboy character from The Big Lebowski.
His purpose for killing the Bigfoot is convoluted and unexpected. Also, the way this movie was edited, I genuinely thought I was missing part of the film at one point due to a sudden jump cut.
I would recommend this movie solely for telling people that you recently watched a movie where Sam Elliot killed Hitler, and Bigfoot. Better than I was lead to believe.
People said it doesn't live up to its name. Yes it does. He does both things and the movie is very much about it. I liked it quite a bit.
It is very different and has an original pace to it. But it is a real good flick. Behind the sillyness of its title and its premise, The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot is an intriguing story that hinges on the verge of being completely unbelievable and absurd - yet is salvaged by some great dialogues, especially in the flashback sequences, and amazing performances all around.
Sam Neill is a joy to experience and he puts a great effort into making the main character simpathetic and layered for the audience.
Despite this, the movie lacks a visual style that hooks the viewer from the get-go. The story really seems to hit a brick wall when it comes to the Bigfoot: the final confrontation is really tough to watch and it could have been done much better.
