I have not read the manga, so this was new to me as well. Enough about me, here is my statement for this manga. Since watching the anime, I thought it was weird, and i was not going to bother wasting my time reading the manga, i have come to understand what a mistake that was.
I am an avid fan of this manga, some of the jokes i probably do not get, as i am not based out of japan and i cannot get the irony, but most of it is quite funny.
There is enough seriousness in this manga to catch the attention of readers, and there is enough funny and weird happenings to keep it fresh.
I will be a loyal fan of this mangaka till the bitter end. Its a great read, if you have given it a few chapters, give it a couple more, it gets better and better.
Whether you laugh, cry, it is one of my all time favorites, and i know it can be for you to, just give it a shot! Rating: At first, I was put off by the setting.
Aliens in Edo? But then, I got bored one day, and I tried it out. The first few chapters were 'meh' but as I continued reading, I found it more and more compelling.
When I got to the first serious arc, I was hooked. This manga is definitely labeled as a gag manga, but it has made me cry more than a few times.
The characters are distinct and fleshed out. Plus, the parodies are hilarious, and more than that, it keeps you wanting more. You see continued growth and change in relationships and characters, even if there is no visible singular plot line.
In fact, Gintama is so amazing because of it's lack of that singular plot. It's not limited in where the story, and hence the characters can go. So if you have time, and you're willing to try for something a little different, give Gintama a try.
I never regretted it, and I hope you won't either. It warms your heart.. I'm a huge Gintama anime fan and think everyone one should watch it at least once.
Let's see, it has hilarious moments, sad, tragical, heart warming, ridiculous, boring, some very very boring, some educational no, seriously!
One episode you are laughing until your stomach hurts and then there are times when your throat aches terribly cuz it's just so fucking sad!!

Gintama ended up being way more than just a few laughs. You will cry. You will feel distressed. And impressed. And just Right after feeling incredibly awkward.
Because this is Gintama after all. Penis and poop jokes are abundant. Along with tears. Man, it's hard to describe. First off, Gintama is comedy. It tackles every form of humor including word play which sometimes gets lost in translation , tongue in cheek humor, toilet humor, parodies, breaking the forth wall and it does it soooo well and so forth and just plain absurdity There is an arc where Gintama's penis is turned into a screwdriver.
Everyone is turning into screwdrivers. Those damn aliens. If you're looking for humor, Gintama will serve you more than enough. There is a downfall to this though.
If you're not familiar with Japanese culture or even some popular figures, some gags will fly right over your head. But fortunately, this doesn't occur often and usually translators try there best to give explanations!
The world Gintama takes place in is pretty silly and insanely genius. The cross of historical and futuristic. Fantasy and science fiction--literally anything is possible in Gintama.
There is space travel and demons. Historical figures use bazookas instead of katanas. Gintoki rides a scooter while searching for a fan while carrying a wooden sword and passing citizens dressed in kimonos and yukatas.
This pseudo historical fantasy science fiction is the foundation of Gintama and it would be nothing without it.
But here's the thing: Gintama is a comedy with a black heart and a silver soul. As raunchy it may be, deep down there is a something warm and fulfilling.
It took about chapters for me to really get and feel the characters. Roughly around chapters I became a blubbering mess couldn't contain my laughter or my sobs.
Through the humor and madness, Gintama is a masterful narrative that flows backwards. Our shounen hero never develops. But as an audience we change out view of our hero with each bit of information we learn from his past.
Bit by bit, piece by piece, we see what our hero has suffered. You look back at things he's said or actions he's done with new understanding of his character, personality and values.
Gintoki is a fully developed character from the start. It's you as a reader who develops as the manga progresses.
The vast secondary characters work in similar ways. But unlike Gintoki, occasionally they will get a spot light that allows them to grow a bit.
Some of these arcs are just as absurd and hilarious as others, but they carry a soft moral core. In the end, Gintama will always be about making connections and living a content life, even if it includes lying around all day reading manga or having weird sexual kinks or being a female and living your life as a man.
As long as your soul is clear and your thoughts happy, you live however the hell you want. So many dick jokes and so many tears.

After all, a long running series resulted in some recycled plot in itself. The ending arc was too long and exhausting to read.
Sorachi is better with short arcs. He's good at creating oomph moment. But you can't have too many oomph moments simultanously.
At the end, I just felt 'thank God, it finally ends. Character designs are stylish enough to distiguish between characters.

I wish in the end the series had not gotten quite so serious, or rather that it had taken much longer breaks from the serious drama instead of having short comedy arcs that reminded you of why you got into the series in the first place.
