Pedersoli hat dabei nur eine kleine Nebenrolle als Stammesführer Brutario, der mit Hannibal über den Durchzug durch seine Ländereien und dessen Preis verhandelt, und ist unter der umfangreichen Kostümierung kaum zu erkennen.

Deutscher Titel. Victor Mature was always an impressing actor but was unfortunately burdened by scripts that kept him confined to beefy heroes for the display of muscles and knuckles in extensive fisticuffs, so it's only seldom he was allowed to actually be the great actor he was.
Gabriele Ferzetti is excellent as Fabius, he has really studied this character carefully, and Rita Gam also makes the best of it, but she was better in Nicholas Ray's "King of Kings" as the lewd Herodias.
This is one of the better Peplum films, they were produced en masse in the fifties up to "The Fall of the Roman Empire", and their number tended to spoil them, give them a bad reputation as only spectacular superficialities, which ultimately made them disappear losing their good box office standing, but a few of them are worth rediscovering for re-evaluation and exoneration.
This was one of them, mainly for the sake of Victor Mature. It lacks the budget to do justice to the big historical battles and it gets bogged down in some tacked-on romantic melodrama which I don't remember reading about in the histories, but at least it looks colourful and exciting.
Victor Mature plays the Carthaginian general who leads his army across the Alps to attack Rome, and yes, he brings his elephants along.
There are only two or three scenes with said elephants but they're handled very well and the best parts of the picture.
This is the kind of film which is entertaining when depicting action but slightly dull for the rest of the time. Terence Hill and Bud Spencer star, years before they went on to be big names in the spaghetti western genre.

En route he falls in love with the beautiful Sylvia, the niece of a Roman senator. After defeating the Romans at Trebbia, Hannibal and Sylvia continue to meet secretly though the girl's uncle warns her she is committing treason against Rome.
Then Hannibal's wife, Danila, arrives unexpectedly from Carthage. Ulmer, is hardly the man I would have chosen to direct any sort of an epic, let alone one about Hannibal and "his mighty army of mastodons that clobbered half the world!
My educated guess is that Ulmer merely directed the English-language dubbing, and that the movie was actually directed by Carlo L.
Despite the spectacle, the scenery and the occasional spurt of action, "Hannibal" emerges as pretty dull, both as a fellow and a picture.
Particularly as a fellow. Indeed, in the inept persona of Victor Mature he's something less than just plain boring.
The other principals struggle valiantly to bring a mite of conviction to their roles, with Milly Vitale making a fair impression in a small, thankless part as our hero's wife.
But what's really needed to bring the picture up to par are a good pair of scissors. Ulmer, with remarkably inept integration of studio and location material.
Even the battle sequences, though staged on an impressive size, are all but ruined by slipshod continuity. In fact, the whole film suffers from maladroit editing which is undoubtedly more the fault of director Ulmer than editor Cinquini.
Only a couple of sequences the aftermath of the battle make any impression. Mature goes through his usual range of mugging and facial contortions as Hannibal and Rita Gam, looking thin and sharp-featured in an unbecoming up-swept hair style, gives plenty of evidence for her present-day lack of demand.
The two "stars" use their own voices while the rest of the cast with the possible exception of Milly Vitale — her role is too small to tell are dubbed.
The film's sole redeeming features are the attractive costumes and the bright though occasionally inexplicably washed-out — most notably in the scenes in the Roman Senate color photography.
Cheesy epic has a few bright spots pninson 24 May This Italian production is hardly in the same league as Spartacus or even The Spartans, but despite its laughable dialogue, wooden acting, and clumsy dubbing, it has a certain intensity.
I did laugh out loud at some of the swordfighting, in which actors are clearly waving their sticks around without any knowledge of what to with them, other than to hit the other actor's stick.
And Victor Mature may have been an early 60s idea of a rugged hero, but the greasy kid stuff does him in to say nothing of his extremely limited range.
As for historical accuracy This has very little to do with actual historical events. The romantic subplot is an invention at least they got somebody really great to look at for the love interest , and Hannibal's speeches about freedom from hate and revenge are absurd if you know anything about the period.
In spite of all these flaws, I found the photography to be mostly excellent, especially in the battle scenes and the crossing of the Alps.
There's a curious, cheesy intensity to some of these sequences that makes the film compelling at times. Spaghetti aimless 18 December The film planted in me an interest in this historical period and was my first taste of cinema gore; my one memory being the blood pouring from a soldier's mouth after he was crushed by an elephant during the army's march over the alps.
In style "Hannibal" is like a really bad spaghetti western, only set it BC and produced by people generally clueless about just who was their target audience.
On one hand the less your sophistication the less energy you will need to burn suspending disbelief. On the other hand the subject matter cries out for a more sophisticated audience interested in history.
And finally the awkwardly inserted love story will go unappreciated by both sophisticated and unsophisticated viewers. Hannibal was a brilliant military tactician from Carthage now Tunisa who gave imperial Rome a run for its money as the dominant world power two centuries before the birth of Christ.
The film was promoted by Warner Brothers as "a fanciful adaptation of history" make that an extremely condensed adaptation.
Given all the omissions it is difficult to understand why they felt compelled to invent a love story.
It might have made some sense if they had paid a box office draw actress to star as the title character's love interest; but Rita Gam was an aging bit player, pleasant in a wholesome Dorothy McGuire way but too detuned to add any sizzle to a production desperately in need of some sparks.
After an especially ponderous title sequence a narrator begins the film by getting the audience up to speed on current events circa BC. Rome is threatening Carthage and Hannibal has decided to head things off by moving his army from Spain to Northern Italy via the Alps.
Then we get 15 minutes of the 40,man Carthaginian army making its way single file over the icy slopes. The editor cuts it shots of officers shouting, "keep moving," soldiers slipping off the path to an icy death, and the same group of elephants rounding the same fake soundstage boulder.
At several points the men must pull themselves up a steep incline with a rope. There are no shots of the elephants, horses, or wagons climbing this rope and this becomes the first of many suspension of disbelief moments; it is unwise to dwell on why the soldiers are subjecting themselves to this dangerous climb since there must be a nearby Roman road for all the animals and baggage.
Hannibal's army emerges from the icy mountain and camps near the country villa of Roman Senator Fabius Gabriele Ferzetti - despite the name this is not a girl.
Fabius is in Rome futilely suggesting that they employ guerrilla warfare and avoid direct confrontation with Hannibal's army. This was in fact the way that the Romans were finally able to rid themselves of the invader but it took them several years to adopt such tactics.
Hannibal and Sylvia have a romance and she is released to tell Rome what a big army he has and that he has only crossed the Alps because he wants peace could have fooled me.
Before you know it Hannibal has hurt his eye and Victor Mature spends the rest to the story wearing an eye patch and the Roman Senate spends its deliberations telling pirate jokes.
The elephants get inserted into several poorly edited battle sequences. They lumber around on occasion they speed up the film to make it look like they are charging and crush a lot of Romans off-camera and the sound people make noises that make it seem like the straw being thrown toward the elephants are actually arrows.
Then at about the one third point of the actual story they run out of film, the narrator briefly explains that Hannibal never was able to sack Rome, and the ponderous title sequence runs again but this time it is full of credits.
Mature was a horrible actor nearing the end of his career at this point. Since most of the cast are Italians whose lines were dubbed and there is no indication that anyone received acting for the camera direction, the production manages a nice lethargic unity.
Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child. MartinHafer 6 December Hannibal was one of the most brilliant military commanders of all time, so it's such a shame that "Annibale" also known as "Hannibal" is such a ponderous and awful film.

Giving Mature support is a cast of Italians who are dubbed into English. The story is slow and the ending is a mess For history lovers like me, the film is too much fiction to be of any interest and for everyone else it's a slow mess of a film.
The acting is spotty, directing questionable at times and even comedic as soldiers slide to their death down small hills and elephants amazingly stop just short of crushing frightened concubines.
You've also got to keep in mind this is 60 years old and acting was not as authentically aligned as it is today. Story is decent albeit very Hollywood, but decent entertaining overall.
I've seen much worse modern films. Hannibal is a victim of extremely poor production values, horrendous Italian directors, and even worse Italian actors.
Mature does his best to salvage the film, but it is as hopeless as the war between Rome and Carthage, which would end with the complete destruction of Carthage after its third and final disastrous war against Rome.
The great Italian directors and actors excelled in neorealism. This film is about as far from realism as you can get. The corny love story subplot only worsens the film with an ugly B Italian actress.
Almost every great Italian film ever made, with the exception of modern Tornatore films, like the great Cinema Paradiso and a few others since the posts, have been in black and white.
This turkey had a hack director, hack actors, and hack production values that tried to use visual violence and gore in place of acting, directing and a script.
It is a mess. The book analyzes the great Italian neorealism period immediately following WW2 and lasting for two decades before Fellini and other great Italian directors took over the transition to modern films.
Hannibal was not part of the process; it was a hack project from the start. Don't waste your time with this junk.
